Respect Your Mother

This is a type design poster that I created in November 2011 for Graphic Design I titled Respect Your Mother. Nature and the environment are very important to me so I wanted to create a poster that promoted a Earth Day celebration. I created the vector graphics in Adobe Illustrator and laid out the overall design, including clipping masks, in Adobe InDesign. The poster was printed at 12" by 18".

  1. The proportion of the central image brings unity to the piece and with the message lettering as the background balances the images impact to the eye.
The cradling sensuous lines of a loving mother with the Earth as whom and child is very effective and the impact for the conservation message brings an elegance to the piece.
I have seen this print in person and find the whole composition to be very professional. The stylized female image is reminiscent of commercial art of the 70s and 80s. Very nice effect.

  2. The subtle use of the complimentary colors red and green is visually effective because it helps carry my eye through the whole design. Also, it doesn't compete with the focal point of the figure embrassing mother earth. The use of space in this design is relative to proportion, for instance if the figure were smaller the poster would lose the effective flow and become busy. The figure is proportionate to the other elements in the design and pulls the viewer in. Great Job Chris I really like this one!

  4. The outlined shape of the woman filled by the negative space and the globe represented by positive and negative space, the two play the center motive of this composition that are also surrounded by words that in themselves create secondary shapes to give depth to the composition.
