  5. The process of sculpting is subtraction removing material to create the form. With this piece I took a 10 by 6 by 1/2 inch piece of foam, cut out some holes and then used a rubber bands to create a structured effect.  Then using that as the model I began to carve into the 25 pound block of firm clay.  The carving marks are deliberate for texture.  To support the base better so the piece would be free standing I opened the interior of the "butt" and removed excess material.    It was fired to bisque and is unglazed.  This was exceptionally enjoyable for me to make in Laura Bloomenstein's 3 D Design course at Yavapai College Spring 2012.
